Getting Around

October 15-18, 2015

General – Transportation Information for Participants

Fibre Arts NL 2015 is a celebration of our amazing Craft, and the Canadian Year of Craft 2015. Set in the sublime splendor of Gros Morne National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this international four day conference will celebrate the versatility of fibre. It will consist of workshops from national and internationally renowned fibre instructors, artist talks, exhibitions, seminars, and tours.

Fibre Arts NL 2015 is a must attend event for anyone who loves and works with fibre, and it will take place in a must experience location – the splendid communities of Rocky Harbour, Norris Point and Woody Point in Bonne Bay, Newfoundland and Labrador. The conference offerings are bound to inspire and develop your own fibre art while leaving you in love with this Province.

Our official provincial name is Newfoundland and Labrador, Fibre Arts NL 2015 will take place on the west coast of the island of Newfoundland. See the Maps section on this website for more specific information on locations.

For those who haven’t been here before, you should know that it’s a big island!  It’s an eight  hour drive from St. John’s to Rocky Harbour.  We will be in Gros Morne in the off season, so the transportation amenities that you will find in urban areas just won’t be available.

We recommend that:

  • Be independent – drive your own car, rent a car, or arrange carpooling
  • Take the Fibre Conference bus from St. John’s – or get picked up along the way. It’ll be a fabulous part of the Fibre Conference experience.  We will arrange a Port aux Basques to Gros Morne bus, too if there is enough interest – let us know.

Following is a summary of transportation options for those who cannot be independent.  Read on for information about:

  1. The Highway Bus – St. John’s to Gros Morne, and back again
  2. The Conference Bus Pass – getting around in Gros Morne during the conference
  3. The Airport Bus – it’s a 90 minute drive from the nearest airport – here’s how to get back and forth
  4. Commercial transport arrangements – air, road, ferry, local taxis, car rentals, and more!
  1. The Highway Bus – St. John’s to Gros Morne, and back again

  1. Conference Bus Pass
  • The Conference Bus Pass will cover local ground transportation between Designated Conference Bus Stops and workshops and between Designated Conference Bus Stops evening meals and entertainment, the Market Place and on Sunday, the Discovery Centre.
  • What’s a “Designated Conference Bus Stop”?  There are seven in Rocky Harbour and Woody Point – if you are using the Conference Bus to get between sites during the conference, you must stay in accommodations near a bus stop.  We cannot visit every B&B in the area for pick-up – Bus users must gather at a Designated Conference Bus Stop for pick-up.
  • Please be aware that:
    a) most workshops and evening meals will take place in Rocky Harbour and Norris Point;
    b) the distances between conference events and accommodations are lengthy, for example Norris Point to Rocky Harbour is 9 km, and Woody Point to Rocky Harbour is 72 km; and
    c) there is no form of public/local ground transportation.

Therefore,

    1. You must have your own transportation: your own car, a rented car or a car pooling arrangement with another conference participant who has a car

OR

    1. You must purchase a Conference Bus Pass for travel to and from your accommodations and conference events.
    1. You are encouraged to book accommodations on the Rocky Harbour/Norris Point side of Bonne Bay if at all possible.
